HYDROPOWER EXPANSION AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION PLAN OF SOUTH SUDAN INTO REGIONAL ELECTRICITY GRID

NEWPLAN in association with Hatch Limited, Canada provided technical assistance to NELSAP, Kigali in power planning for South Sudan and to identify South Sudan's hydropower potential opportunities that will be required to be developed for future power regional cooperation through development of the Nile Water Resources.

Some project facts: 

  • The study assessed the power generation options located in South Sudan and cross-border transmission interconnections required for the optimal integration of South Sudan into the Regional Electricity Grid.

KEERE SMALL HYDRO POWER PROJECT

NEWPLAN was a consultant to Keere Power Company  Ltd for the Feasibility Studies and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

  • The Keere Small Hydro Power project is located on river Atari in Kaptanya Sub-County, Kapchorwa District.

INTERCONNECTION OF ELECTRIC GRIDS IN NILE EQUATORIAL LAKES (NEL) COUNTRIES – UGANDA SECTION (MBARARA-MIRAMA TRANSMISSION LINES & SUBSTATIONS)

NEWPLAN provided consultancy services and supervison to Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL) for the Interconnection of Electric Grids in Nile Equatorial Lakes (NEL) countries – Uganda Section (Mbarara-Mirama transmission lines & substations)

Some project facts:

  • By interconnecting the grids of the Nile Equatorial countries, this project contributed to the implementation of the East African governments strategy of regionalisation of electricity production.
  • It involved the construction of 66 km, 220 kV double circuit transmission line from Mbarara North substation to the Uganda/Rwanda border via a Mirama substation. This component of the project was part of the 172 km long interconnector with Rwanda.
  • Extension of Mbarara North Substation and construction of the new Mirama Substation.

BUGOYE HYDROPOWER PROJECT

NEWPLAN (operating as NORPLAN) was consultant on several contracts and programs relating to this project. 

  1. Feasibility Study and tendered documents for the client SN Power Invest AS
  2. For Trønderenergi AS (Norwegian power company) the following contracts: 
  • Civil Works
  • Electro-Mechanical: Turbine and Generator
  • Electro-Mechanical: Control, Switchyard and Auxiliary Electrical Works
  • Transmission Line
  • RAP (Resettlement Action Plan) and General Logistical Support
  • Environmental and Socio-Economic Programs.

Some project facts:

  • Trønderenergi AS entered into an Agreement with SN Power in September 2007 to take over the Bugoye project. In the interim period from June to September 2007, when Trønderenergi AS decided to proceed with the project, NORPLAN was the advisor to Trønderenergi AS in assisting the Client in the various applications processes for developing and constructing hydropower plants in Uganda.
  • The project has about 165m gross head and a recommended installed discharge of 10 m3/s, which gives an installed capacity in the range of 13 MW.
  • The powerhouse will accommodate two units generating 84 GWh in average annual production.
  • A 6.5km long 33 kV transmission line will evacuate the power from the hydropower plant to the national grid at the Nkenda substation.
